NewRadio Technology Has Closed Angel Round Funding For Developing 5G RF Front-End And UWB SoCs
36kr.com reported that a Shenzhen-based wireless communication chip design startup, NewRadio Technology (纽瑞芯科技), has received angel round funding for the development of 5G RF front-end and UWB (ultra-wideband) integrated chips. The founding round was led by Xinyun Venture Capital and the funds were aimed to develop the next generation wireless communication silicon solutions, including 5G smart RF antenna tuning chips, UWB positioning and communication SoCs, 5G IoT transceiver chips, etc.
According to the statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, 13.77 million 5G mobile phones were shipped in the domestic market by the end of 2019. The tremendously increasing demand is driving the comprehensive upgrade of wireless communication chip technology. Founded in 2016, NewRadio Technology has created a proprietary platform NRTP that empowers the development of the cutting-edge RF technologies for the communication chips.
Cooperated with top universities and world prestigious research institutes, the company has accumulated a wide range of core IPs, including 5G Sub-6G wide-range high-performance frequency synthesizer, high-speed high-precision data converters (ADC/DAC), RF full-duplex integrated front-end, and many other key modules.
The company's current R&D focus is the industrialization of 5G smart antenna tuning chips, and UWB positioning and communication SoCs for the IoT (Internet of Things) applications.
5G Smart Antenna Tuning Chips
The antenna tuning chip is a core radio frequency chip for 5G mobile phones and wearable devices. A smart antenna tuner usually refers to the closed-loop tuner, which requires intelligent vector impedance detecting and adaptive impedance tuning algorithm. At present, only Qualcomm has mature commercial solutions for the closed-loop antenna tuning chips. However, Qualcomm's solution requires a Qualcomm processor being used, which leads to a high cost of this solution. Very limited phone models have leveraged this technique so far.
NewRadio Technology has developed a brand-new smart antenna tuning technology, which removes the dependency on baseband processors. The NRT solution greatly simplifies the system complexity and hence significantly reduces the overall cost. One major advantage of this product is that it can be customized according to customer needs, and it is applicable to various system solutions. The product is planned to be released in 2020, and mass production is planned in early 2021.
UWB technology has a great potential for indoor high-precision ranging and positioning applications. The recently released iPhone 11 has integrated a UWB chip that may fundamentally change people's way of life during the IoT era.
NewRadio Technology has been working on UWB ranging and positioning solutions since the company was founded. The UMAJ series of SoC chips and systems are ultra-low power design with high integrity. As a FiRa member and with experts working with IEEE SA, the UMAJ complies with the latest IEEE 802.15.4a standard. The chip has been successfully taped out in 2019. Mass production is planned by the end of 2020.
